OHIO RIVER (SNN) — A three-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Ollie and his owner are taking to the water to raise money for no-kill shelters.

August 13 marks the beginning of “Ollie’s River Adventure.”

He and his owner, Michael Kruer, will travel 500 miles by jet ski on the Ohio River with three main goals in mind.

“Number one is to raise $5 million for animal shelters and rescues, no-kill shelters and rescues. The second goal is to inspire 10 thousand people to adopt, and the third goal of Ollie’s River Adventure is to inspire 10 thousand people to volunteer at their local shelters. There’s a real need,” said Kruer.

“Ollie The Do Good Dog” and Kruer begin their journey in Pittsburgh after a special pre-game first pitch ceremony at a Pirates game.

The trip will be four to six days long depending on weather delays, locking through 12 dams, and many stops for naps and meet and greets.

Co-creator of “Ollie The Do Good Dog,” Cammy Hummel, and her crew will follow the jet ski in chase vehicles, making sure everything goes accordingly.

“I’ll be the traveling treat vendor,” said Hummel.

Hummel emphasizes different ways you can make a difference in an animal's life.

“Fostering, by volunteering, donating,” said Hummel.

On the Suncoast, dog mom Donna DeRosa is happy to see Ollie and his owners making a difference.

“That’s amazing and it’s awesome and I’m so happy he’s doing it because a lot of people don’t realize if they don’t get adopted, they get euthanized at the shelter,” said DeRosa. “I hope he does really really well and he brings a lot of awareness because it is important.”

Kruer says he does everything he can to make sure Ollie is safe and feels comfortable during the ride.

“He is tied to my vest with a 300 pound test piece of parachute rope basically. He will have a bed on the jetski, he’ll have an awning to keep the sun off of him,” said Kruer.

The 500 mile journey comes to an end in Cincinnati.

Ollie has yet another adventure in the works. A 600 mile beach cleanup in 2024 will raise money for shelters while clearing tons of trash from many Florida beaches.
