LAKEWOOD RANCH (SNN TV) - The Manatee County Commission approves the Lakewood Ranch expansion in east Manatee County.

It's a 2,300 expansion that'll bring 4,500 houses to the area.

Thursday's 5-2 vote approved changes to the county's comprehensive plan in land owned by SMR Taylor Ranch east of Manatee County's Future Development Area Boundary line, or FDAB.

The Herald-Tribune reports this also opens the door for other powerful developers who own underdeveloped land in East Manatee to receive similar approval on areas further east than ever before.

The FDAB was established in 1989 and marks the furthest to the east Manatee County provides water and sewer services to residences.

Every resident who spoke during public comment opposed the proposal and cited effects of water quality and future traffic. One resident called the FDAB a "cruel hoax" and said it doesn't mean anything anymore.
