Dramatic body cam video shows a Sarasota Police officer getting hit by a speeding car who's driver was trying to elude the officers.

Sarasota Police officers were staging a roadblock on Bird Key around 9 p.m. Monday night to stop a suspected burglar.

Security footage shows a white Mercedes fly down bird key, swerve the parked patrol car, and hit the officer, flipping him over the vehicle.

“When we watched the video this morning in our command staff meeting it was horrific. It was terrible,” said Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche.

Officers followed the Mercedes on a chase down the John Ringling Causeway, on to U.S. 41, down Fruitville Road and found it abandoned in the 2900 block of Orange Avenue.

The suspect has not been found.

“This person needs to be put in jail for what he did. He could have killed an officer last night,” said Chief Troche.

Police first responded around 2 p.m. Monday to Mourning Dove Drive for reports that personal items were stolen out of a car.

“Sarasota Police officers discovered video and determined that a white Mercedes was a suspect vehicle,” said Chief Troche.

The guard house at Bird Key caught a photo of the suspect. Police are asking for the community's help to catch him.

“We’re really hoping that people watching the video can help us find who this subject is," said Chief Troche.

The officer was rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he was later discharged. They are expected to make a full recovery.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Detective Kim Laster at 941-263-6827 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 941-366-TIPS.
