Sarasota man dies in collision with dump truck
A 66-year-old Sarasota man died Wednesday morning after crashing into a dump truck.
The accident happened just before 10 a.m. on 17th Street East.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a Cadillac Sedan was approaching 17th Street Park on Gun Club Road in the right turn lane.
Directly in front of them was a dump truck that was trying to turn right into the park.
Unfortunately, the driver of the Cadillac was unable to stop and rear ended the truck.
Troopers believe a medical event may have led to the crash. Witnesses observed the Cadillac swerving before hitting the truck.
“The vehicle was traveling at the very least the speed limit which is 45 miles per hour. There was no breaking prior to the impact of that vehicle which is leading investigators to believe there may have been more to this than simply a rear end collision. That is why we are going to be investigating with the medical examiner’s office to see if the driver had suffered a medical episode just prior to the event,” said Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Kenn Watson.
The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead on the scene.
The 27-year-old driver of the dump truck was uninjured.
Florida Highway patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
