University of Texas fires Chris Beard
AUSTIN, TX (SNN-TV) - The University of Texas has fired Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Beard.
The decision, announced yesterday by Athletic Director Chris Del Conte, comes after Beard was arrested last month on a domestic charge. Beard was charged with assault by strangulation/suffocation - family violence, a third-degree felony, after being accused of choking and hitting his fiancee.
Shortly after his arrest, he was suspended from his coaching position without pay "until further notice." Since then, Rodney Terry has been the acting head coach for the Longhorns basketball team, ranked number 7th in the country in the latest AP poll. Prior to his time at UT, Beard led Texas Tech to the National Championship Game in 2019, losing to Virginia.
Beard's attorney, released a statement writing Beard is "crushed" and "devastated" by the news.
