SARASOTA COUNTY (SNN TV) Nov. 22, 2022 -  With the dust hardly having settled after new Sarasota County School Board members were sworn in, Vice Chair Karen Rose moved to schedule a special meeting in order to consider firing a school superintendent who has gotten excellent evaluations to this point.

According to the Herald Tribune, the board agreed to set that meeting for next Friday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. The session appears to have only one agenda item: whether to fire Superintendent Brennan Asplen IIIAsplen was hired in August 2020 and has kept student test scores on the rise, but the pandemic, and a mask mandate, may do him in.

Bridget Ziegler, who was unanimously elected board chair prior to Rose's motion, told the Herald Tribune that she would have the appropriate discussions with Asplen and that the board was trying to go about the termination discussion the right way.

The board voted 4-1 to move forward with the meeting, with Tom Edwards the lone dissenting vote.
