Sarasota Cuban musician nominated for Latin Grammy
SARASOTA (WSNN) - A local Sarasota musician is headed to Las Vegas for the Latin Grammys this week.
More than 20,000 artists submit their albums every year for this top-tier award.
And out of about 300 in his category, Sarasota resident, Renesito Avich became one of the five nominees.
Avich is known as the one-man Cuban band. Earlier this year, he released an album called Cafe Con Cariño.
It was nominated for the 'Best Traditional Tropical Album,' which is categorized as containing at least 51 percent playing time of new vocal or instrumental Tropical recordings.
Avich says he could not have made it this far without the support of the Suncoast.
"I play Cuban music in Spanish and 85% of my audience speaks English," said Avich. "So, that means that music is a universal language and it unifies everyone. And I’m very happy if God allows me to bring the Grammy to Sarasota."
The 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards will be held this Thursday at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
The Academy is recognizing the best Latin musical releases from June 1, last year, to May 31, this year.
Univision is telecasting it live at 8 p.m. eastern time.
