SARASOTA COUNTY (SNN) - A suspect in an armed robbery was shot by a Sarasota Police Officer Tuesday morning.

A witness called 911 from the Publix on N Beneva Road to report a robbery just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

In the audio, you can hear the woman frantically begging police to come to the scene.

The suspect, a 71-year-old Sarasota man, tried to steal an 83-year-old woman’s purse off her body while she was pushing her groceries to her car.

After unloading the cart, the victim said she was approached by the suspect. That's when he tried to snatch her hand bag.

"This man just grabbed this lady's purse," said the 911 caller.

The victim struggled with the suspect, said he had something shiny in his hand, and threatened her with it.

One witness saw what was happening and tried to help the victim.  The suspect started to leave the area, and the witness followed him, videoing him with his phone while calling 911.

Bystanders in the area say they were surprised at what they saw.

“I saw a bunch of police cars, blinking lights and lots of yellow tape,” said Robert Wieland.

The suspect continued walking southbound through the McDonald’s parking lot across from the Homewood Suites, 3470 Fruitville Road, Sarasota.

“I just saw lots and lots of police cars but earlier we heard the helicopters so we knew something was going on,” said Sarasota resident Kris Maller.

The suspect crossed Fruitville Road. He was confronted by a Sarasota Police officer in the parking lot of the Homewood Suites between two parked cars.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, the suspect was holding a knife. He was ordered to drop the weapon several times. Officers say the suspect did not drop the knife and instead took several steps toward the officer. That’s when the officer shot the suspect.

In a statement, the Sarasota Police Department said: "The officer took his firearm, pointed it at the suspect, and ordered him to drop the knife and get on the ground multiple times.  After the officer commanded the suspect to get on the ground and drop the knife, the suspect advanced toward the officer aggressively with a knife in his hand.  The suspect was told again to stop, drop the knife and get on the ground.  The suspect took several steps toward the officer, and the officer fired his weapon."

“This is a call nobody ever wants to hear, shots being fired and an officer having to call that over the radio. It’s a bad day when an officer has to use force but again this investigation is ongoing by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and hopefully it will come out exactly what happened,” said Genevieve Judge, spokesperson for Sarasota Police Department.

The suspect is expected to recover and the officer was not hurt.

“Not sure of what injuries he or she sustained but I do know they are in stable condition at Sarasota Memorial”, said Judge.

The Sarasota Police Department is handling the robbery the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

The involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.

The suspect is facing charges of Aggravated Assault with a Weapon without Intent to Kill and Armed Robbery.

SNN will obtain this body cam video Wednesday afternoon at a news conference.

It’s scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the Sarasota Police Department Headquarters.
