VENICE - A Suncoast hospital has closed its doors for good, leaving Venice with one less hospital.

ShorePoint Health Venice hospital has officially ceased all of its operation as of September 22nd at noon.

“Facing that harsh reality of having one less hospital in Venice," said Venice Chamber of Commerce President & CEO, Kathy Lehner.

Over the past few weeks, patient care services have ended or transitioned to other locations since the closing announcement of Venice Shore Point Hospital. In a news release Shore point officials pointed to changes in health care services available in the region, specifically the opening of the new Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Venice campus last November as a reason for the closure.

“It’s a really good thing that we have them there and I know that they are under a very heavy burden taking on everything and everyone it would have been nice to work something out and work together but sometimes things just don’t happen," said Lehner.

ShorePoint Health in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda will continue to offer emergency services, inpatient medical and surgical care, as well as behavioral health services. In August, the Venice Area Chamber of commerce held a job fair to help Venice Shore point employees, including a 30-year OR veteran a new job.

“She was so grateful for the job fair that was here, because she was just offered another job, didn’t see that coming," said Lehner.

HealthPark in Venice will continue to offer outpatient surgery, imaging and wound care. With one less hospital in Venice, Lehner says the city will definitely see an impact in the area.

“The economic impact the hospital had above and beyond for the business community was tremendous, it’ll hurt even further, wait til Christmas, all the big Christmas parties that happened the ripple effect is coming, it’s definitely coming," said Lehner.

Shore Point officials say there has been inbound interest from non-healthcare related entities regarding the property. However, they do not have specific information to share about potential future uses of the facility at this time.
