MANATEE COUNTY (WSNN) - A multi-vehicle crash in Manatee County sent three people to the hospital, Friday morning.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 41/14th Street West and Cortez Road.

Florida Highway Patrol tells SNN the driver of a Cadillac STS ran a red light going northbound at U.S. 41/14th Street West and T-boned a truck driver traveling eastbound on Cortez Road.

Both vehicles spun out and hit two other vehicles.

The Cadillac had a Manatee County deputy behind him.

"As this vehicle was approaching a steady red traffic light, the deputy attempted to stop him," said Kenn Watson, an FHP Trooper. "Unfortunately, the person either looked in his rearview mirror and realized there was a deputy behind him or didn't realize he was going through a red light. Unfortunately, he struck another vehicle."

The truck driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, and two others were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The Cadillac driver is charged with running a red light and driving with a suspended license.

Two lanes were closed on Cortez Rd, but after about two hours the roadway reopened.

FHP is still investigating.
