SARASOTA COUNTY (SNN) - The House passed legislation that would ban assault weapons for the first time since 2004.

The legislation would criminalize knowing sale, manufacture, transfer, and possession of many types of semi-automatic weapons and large capacity magazines.

The legislation shows that Democrats intend on pressing forward with more strict gun legislation.

The bill passed largely along partisan lines by a vote of 217 to 213.

Suncoast Congressmen Vern Buchanan and Greg Steube voted against it.
