BRADENTON - According to Manatee County Deputies a homeowner shot and killed a man following a failed home invasion in Bradenton Friday morning.

Deputies responded to an armed home invasion in the 4500 block of 27th Street West just after 11 a.m. According to the homeowner he was woken up when 26-year-old Demetrius Downer placed a pistol to his head.

"Well first of all it was surprising because this is relatively clam neighborhood,” said a concerned neighbor.

SNN spoke to a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. She says she arrived home from work surprised to see her street filled with law enforcement.

"I first said ‘Oh my God’ it must’ve been something serious because the street was completely surrounded,” the neighbor said.

Deputies say Downer fired a round next to the homeowners head and pistol whipped him. The homeowner fought back and eventually grabbed the pistol and fired one shot at Downer who fell to the ground.

According to a statement deputies arrived to the home but found no sign of Downer at the residence. Deputies searched the area for a possible injured man and discovered Downer unresponsive on the ground near the victims’ home.

"Everyone should be aware in their neighborhood of what is going," she said. "Today it was there, you never know when it could happen to you.”

SNN reached out to the Manatee County Sheriff Office for a comment but were not immediately available at this time. Deputies say Downer died as a result of a gunshot wound.
