Three Die in New Years Eve Crashes
SARASOTA- Three Traffic fatalities in less than 12 hours this New Year’s Eve, and Florida Highway Patrol Officials want people to stay careful on the roads over the holiday weekend.
“Unfortunately this was a deadly New Year’s Eve,” Trooper Kenn Watson said. “As I’m talking you right now, we’re investigating two traffic homicides in Sarasota County.”
Just before 1 AM, a Honda traveling Northbound on S Shade tried to turn left onto Grove Street. The driver did not see the Ford traveling Southbound, and crashed… killing the passenger of the Honda.
Three hours later, a chevy impala lost control on US 41 as it approached the Bay Street intersection.
“That vehicle crossed through a grassy median,” Trooper Watson said. “Crossed all Southbound lanes of US 41, then struck the traffic signal at this location.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
In North Port… an Uber passenger trying to do the right thing and not get behind the wheel… was killed by a suspected Drunk driver in a crash just after 6 PM at the corner OF Toledo Blade Blvd and Woodhaven Drive.
41-year-old Mark Barcia faces charges of DUI Manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury, DUI with personal injury and DUI with property damage after the fatal crash.
All three crashes remain under investigation.
“The bottom line is we have to make better decisions,” Trooper Watson said. “We have to make plans before we go out, and we have to have that good situational awareness. This is not about receiving a traffic citation, this is about staying alive. Keeping you and your family safe.”
If anyone has information on any of these crashes you can contact the Florida Highway Patrol and North Port Police Department.
