SARASOTA - Beware! That call from the police may actually be a wolf in police clothing. The Sarasota Police Department is warning about a phone scam where a caller pretends to be from the police and demands the recipient make an immediate payment.

Scammers are modifying caller ID to make the calls appear to be coming from the police department's number, when in fact they are likely coming from overseas. The callers say unless a payment is made over the phone the victim will be arrested. Sometimes the scammers demand people pay a red light camera ticket using bitcoin.

Police remind citizens that the Sarasota Police Department will never solicit funds over the phone or request personal financial information, and if you have any questions you should call the SPD.
