SARASOTA - Sharon Kunkel has always been about helping others through storytelling.

“It’s about helping your clients to operate ethically," Kunkel said about public relations.

She worked with nonprofits, and five years ago she realized she wanted to do things on her own.

“I wanted to be able to take clients who really aligned with my values system," Kunkel said.

She founded her own PR firm, Wordslinger Marketing & PR, and some of her clients you may know are Goodwill Manasota and Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. She also has a passion for music that goes back to her childhood.

“I got my first drum set when I was 13 and played in my bedroom often for hours," Kunkel said.

Falling in love with music would lead to her falling in love with her soulmate. She met her husband through her second band. They still moonlight as rockers, in their band Version 3.0.

“Our tagline is, 'rebooting rock 'n roll,'" Kunkel said.

They cover classic rock tunes all throughout the Suncoast, and oddly enough, Sharon gets the same feeling behind her drum set, as she does helping tell her clients' stories.

“It might be someone else’s music that we’re playing up on stage, but there’s something about that song that resonated with us that caused us to choose it," Kunkel said, "and the same way in public relations, you have to find the heart of a story.”

Her double life may be exhausting, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I consider myself very fortunate to be able to pursue all of those things," Kunkel said.
