SARASOTA - A developer has purchased a portion of the former Sarasota Kennel Club for a future project.

JBCC Development paid $1.5 million for 1.75 acres at the northwest corner of the property, including a portion of the parking lot off Bradenton Road, according to the Herald Tribune.

The Kennel Club closed its racing operation in May. Florida voters approved a constitutional amendment last year that bans dog racing after 2020. The Sarasota-based JBCC did not reveal its plans for the property, although the company focuses on 55 -and-over resort rental communities and retail projects, including WaWa stores and the Walmart on Bee Ridge Road.

Developers from Bronxville, New York, have talked about using a majority of the property to build accessibly priced for working families.

One Eyed Jacks, the Kennel Club's poker room, continues to operate there.
