Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe of Florida celebrates 20 years in their big show
SARASOTA - The coordinators say it will be a high-energy event offering sensational entertainment. It will feature the founder himself, Nate Jacobs, along with WBTT founding members, plus WBTT’s most popular artists and WBTT’s house band.
Rehearsals are underway for WBTT’s 20th-anniversary celebration. A lot of thought goes into the coordination of the show. When prepping for it, Resident choreographer, Donald Frison, tries to incorporate movement to help tell the story.
"I try to envision what I want to see on the stage, not just in the movement, but in the scene, how I want the scene to look," Donald Frison said. "Then I’ll bring the dancing into it to help tell the story.”
The performers work hard to make the movement come to life. They have been rehearsing two to three times a week for the last couple of weeks. Performer, Michael Mendez, says they all work together like a team.
"Everybody is pushing, everybody is pulling weight, not only in their positions," Michael Mendez said. "But wherever something needs to be picked up. Someone drops a ball, somebody else picks it up.”
When it all comes together on show day, Performer, Tarra Conner jones, says you can expect to see something from the last 20 years.
"They will get some back story and information on the theatre and our founder, Nate Jacobs." Tarra Conner jones said. "They’ll get pizazz and dancing, and leaps, and singing and belting honey for the Gods, cause that we do, we belt.”
But after all is said and done, the cast and coordinators describe the 20th anniversary extravaganza as
"Special," Frison said.
"Magic," Tarra Conner jones said,
"Heartwarming," Mendez said.
