PTSD survivor bringing party, resources to vets
SARASOTA - A Post Traumatic Stress Disorder survivor is throwing a Sarasota block party for veterans.
Sarasota veteran and yoga instructor Kendra Simpkins is co–founder of Operation Warrior Resolution She is hosting a Veterans Day block party Saturday night, featuring live music, vendors and celebrity guest Jerry Springer in Sarasota's Rosemary District.
Simpkins is showcasing resources and alternative therapies for local veterans dealing with PTSD as she tries to mitigate the national suicide epidemic, according to the Herald Tribune.
In 2018, the Department of Veterans Affairs reported that active–duty and retired military personnel were taking their lives at a rate of 20.6 per day.
Simpkins, a Riverview HS graduate who was recently named Sarasota Female Veteran of the Year, says she came very close to becoming one of those statistics. So, she wants to ensure others do not add to those statistics.
The free block party runs from 4 to 9 p.m. at Mary Lane along CitySide Apartments at 700 Cocoanut Avenue.
