MANATEE COUNTY - Five counties, including Manatee and Sarasota joined a massive volunteer event Friday, tackling more than 90 service projects.

It's all part of United Way Suncoast's "Day of Caring". In Manatee County, more than 200 Publix employees took time off Friday morning to build plant beds at the Palmetto Youth Center and Sugg Middle School.

The school's brand new garden will serve as a teaching tool for their new Urban Agriculture Program. United Way Suncoast's Manatee Area President, Bronwyn Beightol said, "I walked in with two Publix employees and one of them told me they were up till 3 this morning because their shift ended at 3 a.m. and they're here today because they care that much about giving back and about building that more hopeful future for our children and families."

Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Desoto counties also participated. In Sarasota, volunteers helped with maintenance and landscaping at the Boys & Girls Club.
