SARASOTA- Employees at the Sarasota Herald Tribune joined employees from other GateHouse newspapers from around the country in a protest and day of Action ahead of a merger with Gannett papers.

Before the merger goes through GateHouse Media is planning potential cuts that could affect local newspapers across the country. Billy Cox says its important readers support their local journalists.

“We are doing what I would call really heroic work with the resources that we’ve got,” Cox said. “And I think that’s really heroic, if you look at National stories, so many of the National stories are generated by local community content and that’s what we’re doing day in and day out, and I really hope that people out there will help us out, read, let us know that you read.”

Today’s day of action was held outside more than 50 GateHouse papers across 14 states.
