Manatee County may re-draw school zones
MANATEE COUNTY - Some students in Manatee County schools spend two hours on the bus to and from school every day. According to the Herald Tribune, that soon may change.
In the new proposed school districts, students would be zoned to attend the schools closest to their homes, and many would be able to walk to school. In the current zones, small pockets of low–income areas are zoned for schools over 15 miles away.
In a board workshop Tuesday, committees presented proposed new school zones for the board to consider.
For the next 30 days, the public can comment on them. The board will vote on them in November, and members seemed encouraged by changes.
