October brings new phone use while driving laws
SUNCOAST - The law regulating the use of wireless devices takes effect today, October 1st, so now Florida drivers can be stopped for holding phones in school and work zones.
You can't have the phone in your hand at all in these zones. The only thing you can do is talk on a hands-free device. If you are holding a phone or any kind of device, you will be stopped, and you will be issued a warning. Drivers using a wireless communications device in a school crossing, school zone or active work zone will be issued warnings through December 31, 2019.
Starting January 1, 2020, drivers will be cited for using any wireless communication devices in a handheld manner in these designated areas. Florida's 'Put It Down: Focus on Driving' campaign is illuminating drivers about these new regulations.
