Rep. Steube moves to make pot more accessible to research
SARASOTA - Sarasota Congressman Greg Steube wants to make marijuana a Schedule III drug, instead of Schedule I.
Marijuana has long been lumped in with heroin and other substances that are deemed to have no medical benefit and a high abuse potential. The classification has inhibited marijuana research, even as many states have legalized the drug for medical use.
Steube believes it is time to change how marijuana is classified at the federal level. The Sarasota Republican filed legislation Thursday that would reschedule marijuana, making it a Schedule III drug.
As a schedule III drug, researchers can now access federal funds to research this substance and determine its medical value.
