SARASOTA - A suspected carjacker is involved in a major crash in Sarasota after police try to pull him over.
The crash shut down u.s. 41 in both directions at 42nd street at around 3:45 Wednesday afternoon.
George Sparrow, 52, was wanted by the Sarasota Sheriff's Office in connection with a car jacking reported Tuesday night just before 7 pm at Lockwood Ridge Rd.
"We had information from the Sheriff's Office," Lt. Armstrong said. "There was a vehicle that was stolen and also involved in a carjacking, we had some suspect information as well as a possible driver, one of our investigators today located that vehicle from information from the sheriff's office."
Sarasota police officers tried to pull over the stolen silver Cadillac when the driver sped off, crashing into another car.
The person was taken into custody," Lt. Armstrong said. "But then realized that there were injuries involved and they were taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. We're working with the Sheriff's Office, as they're investigation is continuing on their investigation, but also we have an investigation on the traffic crash."
Both Sparrow and the other driver are expected to be okay at this time.
The Sheriff's Office charged Sparrow with kidnapping, carjacking, and grand theft.
He is being held in Sarasota county jail without bond.
