Suncoast rated as best place to retire in state
SUNCOAST - We all know the Suncoast is a great place to retire, and now many others will know, too. Sarasota, Punta Gorda and Venice were all selected for top spots for retirement in the Sunshine State by Kiplingers Personal finance.
Sarasota ranked first on the list, with plaudits for its upscale shopping on St. Armands Circle, the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System and white sand beaches. The share of 65 and over population is 26.5%, much higher than the 14.9% average nationwide.
Punta Gorda, at No. 5, reports a 55.3% share of 65-plus residents. Lots of golf, Fisherman's Village, and miles of bike trails were important in the rating.
In Venice, ranked seventh, 61% of the residents are 65 or older. The report liked the proximity to the water, the palm tree-lined sidewalks in the historical neighborhoods, the Venice Theatre and the Venice Symphony at the Performing Arts Center.
