SARASOTA --This time last year, some schools had the same amount of upperclassman at practice as Sarasota had total players. Head coach of the Sailors Spencer Hodges is seeing the plan take shape.

“Those numbers are up another 50 kids compared to last year, so the buzz is around now we are just building the substance,” Hodges said.

From nine seniors on last year’s roster, to more than 30 on tap for 2019.

“Credit to those guys for sticking this place out the last four years, and really changing the culture here, I am really proud of those guys and this season will depend on them a ton,” Hodges said.

The number one return man in the state last year, KeAndre Collins, is back and better than ever.

Keandre lights out, number one returner in the state last year “Even bigger faster stronger than he was last year. He is really learning football, so we will kind of let him off the chain a little bit,” Hodges said.

How about the big name talent heading south from Braden River to link up with former Pirate assistant Hodges. Star running back Brain Battie, fresh off a 2,100 yard season under Curt Bradley. As well as, 225-pound tight end Travis Tobey, who racked up 450 yards through the air.

“I Came in day one we were best friends it seems like, the chemistry is there already. It is more of a brotherhood now, so that will definitely play a big factor,” Tobey said.

Manning the aerial attack for Tobey will be skyscraper, 6 foot-7, Vince Parisi.

“He is a smart decision maker, he is not aggressive he just takes what he gets. So he just collects a little bit of money, little bit of change and we count it up at the end of the game,” Hodges said.

As the season draws near, the goal for Sailor nation is clear as day.

“Come back hard, win the first game and win the rest of the games, because we have not done that in a while. That would be good if we can get to the playoffs,”Collins said.

Tobey is ready to bring a new mentality to the Sailors locker room.

“We want Sarasota to be the tough team. Dog fight every play the whole game, lets play through the whole game, win or lose they are going to know who we were.”
