SARASOTA - Mote makes an exciting announcement on the success of sea turtle nesting season for this year. According to Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program, a record breaking 5,063 nests across all sea turtle species is documented for the season. Included in the numbers is 170 green turtle nests which Senior Biologist Kristen Mazzarella find most impressive.

“Really excited to see that new species increasing on our coast. But we’re also putting a lot more turtles into the population this year with the number of successful nest that hatchlings are emerging from," say Mazzarella.

The 38-year-old STCRP program monitors the sea turtle nesting along our Suncoast beaches. Researches continue to tag green turtles, along with tracking them which you can follow along via Mote’s website. Nesting season officially ends on October 31.
