Panhandling measures to be taken
MANATEE COUNTY - The City of Bradenton, and Manatee County, pledge to address panhandling.
Manatee County commissioners and Bradenton City Council members on Tuesday pledged to work together to curtail panhandling in both jurisdictions, according to the Herald Tribune.
"It's not the homeless that we're picking on," Bradenton City Councilman Gene Brown said during the meeting of the Manatee County Council of Governments. Brown said panhandlers on street corners are "getting very aggressive. They're going to affect our economy if we don't get this under control."
County Attorney Mickey Palmer said his staff met with Bradenton City Attorney Scott Rudacille on Monday. They are researching case law and ordinances from across the nation to determine what can be done that may withstand a court challenge.
Palmer said county commissioners instructed him last week to have a report done within two months.
