Racing accidents like Sundays double wipe out at the 35th annual Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix are the reason racers need dunker safety certification. On Saturday in preparation for the Grand Prix racers met at Arlington Park Pool in Sarasota to prove they are trained for the worst,  a boat flipping and putting them underwater in a race against time.

The certification  includes a simulation of that potentially harrowing experience. The testing was done by Dark Side Offshore Racing Rescue, an organization that trains proper escape technique and provides rescue team services for the races. According to the Herald-Tribune Racers must renew their certifications yearly to participate in the high–speed competitions.
