SARASOTA COUNTY - More leatherback sea turtle nests have been found in Sarasota County.

In fact, 4 more have been found, but the locations are being kept secret to protect the rare marine creatures.

The excitement over four — yes, four — leatherback sea turtle nests found in Sarasota County is rising.

Two more nests created by the largest of all living turtles were discovered from Casey Key north to Sarasota in the last month, not long after  two massive leatherback crawls signaled the rare, second–ever noted presence of the soft–shelled sea creature in this area.

The first two nests were found by turtle patrols — one in Venice and another in Sarasota, according to Mote Marine Laboratory, which uses volunteer staffers to document sea turtle nests. Exact sites for the nests are being kept secret to protect the structures from harm. They have been staked off and caged to ward off predators.
