SARASOTA COUNTY - A horse from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office mounted patrol unit is retiring from service.

Leo is a 15–year–old Hanoverian bay gelding now suffering from Shivers, a neuromuscular disorder.

Deputies say the horse became a natural fit for the mounted patrol unit because of his calm demeanor.

During his three years of service, Leo worked spring break on Siesta Key and patrols at local malls for the holiday season, along with events for Memorial Day, just to name a few.

Leo will live with other retired police horses at the equine sanctuary, Mill Creek Farms, in Alachua.
