Former BRHS football coach out of prison, living quietly
MANATEE COUNTY - Braden River's inaugural head football coach has been out of prison for more than a year, under the radar. Josh Hunter was the former Pirates football coach who flipped his truck while under the influence and killed Doug Garrity, his best friend.
Despite Garrity's parents begging the judge for mercy for Hunter, he was sentenced to 10 years and five months in prison. However, in 2015 former Gov. Rick Scott lopped 3 years off that sentence, saying clemency is an opportunity to temper justice with mercy. With that, and good behavior time he was released on January 28, 2018.
His release went unnoticed, and that might have been newsworthy in itself. According to Chris Anderson of the Herald Tribune and Hunter's lawyer, Hunter was at the Avon Park Correctional Institute, he reportedly was helping inmates earn their GEDs, and he would like to teach and coach again in some capacity.
