SARASOTA- Blood supply at Suncoast Blood Bank has fallen to its lowest levels in recent history. There is a critical need for all blood types in the community because high usage has led to critically low levels. The blood bank is calling on community members to restore the levels needed for trauma patients as well as other essential needs for cancer and surgical patients.

The low levels come after need for Massive Transfusion Protocol at a local hospital, requiring multiple transfusions of blood over a 24-hour time frame. The high usage is partnered with the summer season, which has historically created a low inventory of blood products.

Winter residents are gone, families are on vacation and high schools are not in session.  Student donations account for almost 25% of the community blood supply making summers are especially challenging,” Director of Community Development Jayne Giroux said.

SCBB has donor centers in Sarasota, Venice, Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch.  Eight bloodmobiles are also stationed throughout these communities for the convenience of donors.  To locate a donor center near you, or a bloodmobile in your neighborhood, please visit scbb.org.  To schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-866-97-BLOOD.  Walk-ins are always welcome.
