State legislators want to regulate vacation rentals
State legislators want to take away local authority over vacation rentals. Monday during a state House committee hearing local governments fought to retain the ability to regulate short term vacation rentals as State leaders tried to wrestle that authority away. Single–family homes that are rented out for short term vacations have been an issue for years in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
All of these local ordinances have been grandfathered in under previous attempts by the Legislature to seize control over vacation rentals, but those grandfathered rules would be repealed under the legislation HB 987, that advanced yesterday.
After 2014, Holmes Beach and Anna Maria adopted ordinances that instituted rental inspection programs and maximum occupancy levels. That wouldn't be allowed under this bill, which instead seeks to bump up state supervision of rentals.
