Boy airlifted to hospital after a suffering a self inflicted gunshot wound in Parrish
A 12-year-old boy gets air lifted to an area hospital Wednesday after suffering a gunshot wound in Manatee County.
Manatee County deputies say it happened shortly after 3:30 P.M. in the 4700 block of 100th Dr. East in Parrish.
The child suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the parents were home.
CPR efforts were applied to the boy and he took a helicopter to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.
He’s undergoing surgery and his condition is unknown at this time.
Neighbor Teria Belgrabe says she could not believe what happened.
"It's very alarming to me. I mean we just recently moved into this community, and I have a 12–year–old myself so to think that something like that is actually happening today it really concerns me."
Manatee County Sheriff's spokesman Randy Warren says the parents are at a loss and the right personnel are involved in the investigation.
"Family is grieving right now very difficult for them. We have child protection people that are trained in this type of thing in dealing with juvenile cases that are on scene along with patrol deputies and other detectives certainly not a good day."
The investigation is ongoing. Stay with SNN for updates to this story.
