NORTH PORT -  North Port commissioners have approved waivers for a future hotel there. The first in years.

The board agreed to waive several design standards for the proposed 100–room Hampton Inn & Suites. The hotel received four waivers to aspects of the city code that called for a Mediterranean design for properties along U.S. 41 — notably elimination of barrel tile roofing — as well as an exemption from installation of windows that open and close, and cobbling on faux balconies.

North Port's Hampton Inn will be one of a the new hotels that Hilton has been rolling out to refresh its image. Once ground is broken, expect 13 months to build it, which would have the hotel open for guests in May or June 2020.
