Robinson Preserve hits by red tide
MANATEE COUNTY - Red tide is now encroaching on Robinson Preserve.
Thousands of mullet died in the backwaters of Robinson Preserve after becoming trapped and choked by red tide. They appeared to have been caught by a flow of the harmful algae that quickly moved into Lower Tampa Bay earlier this week.
Seasonal red tide is normally found from August to December but this bloom has been around since last October(2017). The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission reported this week that red tide levels actually decreased in Sarasota and Manatee counties, but that is no consolation to people visiting Robinson Preserve.
