UPDATE: Sarasota County Sheriff's Office recovered the stolen sniper rifle stolen from the Deputy's vehicle, the handgun is still missing. One arrest has been made, but the investigation remains active and ongoing.

SARASOTA- Two weapons and Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office SWAT equipment were stolen out of a Deputy’s car Monday night after he left his vehicle unlocked.

“The Sheriff is very disappointed because we often times tell the community to really be conscious and tell the community to be aware of your surroundings, and to make sure you lock your vehicle, it’s obvious, it’s a given, and one of our own made a poor decision.”

Detective Brian Keane an 18 year Veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and SWAT team member left his car unlocked Monday Night at his home in North Port.

“And someone or multiple people broke into that vehicle and stole a lot of specialized equipment,” Perez said. “A lot of equipment that’s very dangerous if it gets into the hands of the wrong people.”

Included in that equipment, a standard 9mm service weapon, and a high capacity sniper rifle.

“Any time there is a weapon out there, and it gets into the wrong persons hands the public should absolutely be concerned about that,” Perez said. “So we are hoping the public can help us connect the dots here, and we want to get this weaponry back into safe keeping as quickly and as safely as possible.”

Keane will remain on duty while the Internal Affairs team determines if any policy violations occurred.

“Hopefully we’ll have an outcome here soon to determine what happened,” Perez said. “What’s going to happen next for this Deputy, and finally, the recovery of those weapons.”
