MANATEE – As the old adage goes, defense wins championship.

“Defense has always been the backbone of the Southeast football program… Strong defense has always been the Highmark here, and those guys have picked up the torch and they are running with it.”

Last week against Lakewood Ranch, the Southeast Seminoles housed 4 fumbles for touchdowns in a dominate 40-3 win over the Mustangs. But head coach of Southeast, Brett Timmons knows his squad is dealing with a red hot Bayshore team.

“We are playing a great Bayshore team… They feel confident that this is a team that can win district. We just hope that we can put on a show and stay on the football field with them.”

Seminole Quarterback Gabe McDonald completed 63% of his passes last week, good for 161 yards. With just a little over 100 points scored between the two teams combined 3 games into the season; this 5A district game could very well be decided in the trenches.

“I expect a fast physical game, they have one of the biggest offensive lines we have faced, and they have a big physical back… Those guys are riding with great momentum at the moment. They have a great defensive coordinator in Jamal Sanders, it’s going to be a good game on Friday.”

Three points in three games… this is what Bayshore has yielded as we are set to enter week 4 of the season. Much like Southeast, defense rains supreme in Bruins Country..

Head Coach of the Bruins, John Biezuns is quite proud of the defense. “We haven’t given up a TD in three games… We have a strong defensive line our linebackers are a good core. A lot of teams haven’t been throwing the ball on us. Southeast likes to throw the ball around, so I actually think it’s going to be a good thing for us.”

Off to the schools best start since 2003, Bayshore at 3-0 will look to beat Southeast for the first time in 14 years.

“These guys all went to elementary school together, and grew up in the same neighborhoods. Even though we haven’t won thirteen straight, so that kind of takes a toll. Southeast has had our number the last couple years.

What makes this one different?

“This is the first district game, it happens to be Southeast. They are 2-1, we are 3-0, there’s a ton of stuff on the line. We’ve had a great week of practice, we are ready for anything.”

It’s officially time for district games on Friday Football Fever!
