Shots fired during party on church property
SARASOTA – The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fight and shots fired at a large party at St Wilfred Episcopal Church on Saturday night around 10:30 p.m.
Virginia Herring who is the Priest in Charge at the church says the church rents out its hall to people in the neighborhood who need a venue for big family parties, this rental was a party for a 15 year old girl.
“Some people apparently came to the party who were not invited and started a fight which did mercifully go outside and a gun was fired,” said Herring.
Deputies say the male victim arrived at a local hospital with a leg wound from a gunshot.
Herring says the people of the church will take their time before renting out the hall again.
The church plans to make changes to ensure this doesn’t happen again in the future.
“One thing I’m pretty sure we’ll do is go to the Sheriff’s Office and see about posting signs for no weapons because that seems like a no brainer. I don’t know what else we’ll do. We have to meet and talk about it. I don’t want to react in haste,” said Herring. “We’ve been renting out the church for 3 years and nothing like this has happened.”
Herring says this one event is not a reflection of the church.
“Wilfred is a wonderful active church. We have a food pantry that feeds 70 families every week. Last year between August 31-August 31, we served 108 tons of food. We have a pre-school that is wonderful. 5 stars. It has babies up to Pre-K,” said Herring.
Deputies say the victim and the suspect know each other.
