SARASOTA – A 22 year old LECOM student died Sunday, a day after being struck by a boat.

Officers with FWC and the Sarasota County Police Department responded to a single–boat accident that occurred off Lido Key Beach on Saturday Around 4:50 p.m.

A preliminary investigation found that Maggie Murray was in the water when a 27–foot pontoon boat, began to depart and she was struck by the boat’s propeller.

Murray had recently completed her first rotations and was beginning a second round.

Katie’s professor, Dr. Katie Dinh remembers her for having a hunger to learn.

“She will be sorely missed, not just by me but by the whole entire student body and the whole faculty. She was a very bubbly, always smiling student. I don’t know her academically enough because she only had one class with me. I was looking forward to have her more in my other courses,” Dr. Dinh said.

According to the Herald-Tribune her death was announced on a page established to help the family cover medical bills and funeral costs.

The campaign surpassed its $15,000 goal and was nearing $20,000 by Monday afternoon.
