SARASOTA – The teacher, verse the student. Head coach of Cardinal Mooney, Paul Maechtle spent 41 years at Southeast High School, registering 283 career victories, and five state title appearances.
The Seminoles current head coach, Brett Timmons, played line-backer on Southeast’s back-to-back State title teams in 1993 and 1994, under the legend Maechtle.
Not to many times in life you get to coach or play against a guy who helped get you to where you need to be in life. Hopefully we can put a product on the field that he is proud of, Brett Timmons.”
Southeast enters the show down 3-2, in search of the school’s first road win of the year. With all the attention on the past, and the historical side of the match up, it’s important to live in the present.
For coach Maechtle and the Cougars it’s like he never put down the play-sheet.
“Kind of like getting back on a bike and riding it. Had to make sure you had the right nickname for the program and not say one instead of the other, Paul Maechtle.”
Off to an undefeated start at 5-0, and a defense allowing 15 points a game. Coach Maechtle and the Cougars will host a Southeast school where he etched his names in the history books.
Nothing but praise for Brett Timmons, the once upon student of the game under coach Maechtle.
“It’s going to be a little bit different going against Brett… He knew how to stop what we were doing when we were having scrimmages. It’s going to be little bit different.”
Four decades as the leader at Southeast, now for the first time on Friday, he will look across the field at the shoes he once filled.
