SARASOTA – A fresh start for the famed Celery Fields may not take place in the forseeable future.

The Sarasota County Commission heard plans from Fresh Start, a citizens group trying to keep the land out of the hands of industrialists, but the commission rejected the proposal.

In the spring, Fresh Start gave some ideas for a proposed outdoor sports complex by the YMCA with a soccer field, tennis courts, clubhouse, and possibly shops and restaurants, and the commission asked that more details be brought to yesterday’s meeting.

According to the Hearld-Tribune Commission Chairwoman Nancy Detert expected a more detailed plan, but instead of providing detailed plans, the group highlighted the need to avoid selling the land for industrial use.
