SARASOTA – A bill sponsored by Suncoast Congressman Vern Buchanan to outlaw the slaughter of dogs and cats for meat consumption passed the U.S. House on Wednesday.
The practice is rare but remains legal in 44 states. Congressman Alcee Hastings is a co–chair of the Florida delegation with Buchanan and co–sponsored the bill.
The Dog And Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act would amend the Federal Animal Welfare Act to reflect the ban.
Buchanan said in a statement, “dogs and cats provide love and companionship for millions of people and should not be slaughtered and sold as food.”
The bill is also backed the U.S. Humane Society And Animal Wellness Action.
