Traffic stop leads to drug, weapon charges

SARASOTA – A driver’s tinted windows led to an arrest over the weekend.

According to police, 20-year-old Tory Mitchell of Sarasota drove past officers near the 3200 block of U.S. 301, when they noticed his windows were extremely dark.

When officers approached the vehicle they could smell marijuana inside.

They searched the car, finding a loaded firearm, a small bag of marijuana and crack cocaine.

Police Spokeswoman Genevieve Judge says this is the 135th firearm recovered by S.P.D. since Jan. 1, 2018.

“We believe this is not only possibly one less loss of life, but it’s possibly one less person being injured in our community with a firearm that’s used in a crime,” Judge said. “Our officers work 24-7 and use proactive policing and integrative strategies to continue to keep firearms off our streets, so that’s what we’re gonna do to continue to keep the city of Sarasota a safe place to live, work, and play.”

Mitchell was arrested and taken to the Sarasota County Jail on two felony charges and one misdemeanor charge, in addition to a citation for tint violation.

He is now out on bond.
