SARASOTA COUNTY – The Opera House hosted the production We Are Sarasota on Monday.

The Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity and Inclusion Committee says they along with Booker High School students and Westcoast Black Theatre Troup put the project together.

The performance tells the story of civil rights history through drama, song and dance.

Republican state representative Joe Gruters, city commissioner Hagen Brody and other political figures attended the presentation.

Diversion and Inclusion Committee event chair Charlie Ann Syprett says the show offers a real history lesson.

“To show the audience to create a compelling and vivid picture demonstration of the role that our history played in making Sarasota the rich diverse and multicultural community that it is today.”

Syprett says more than 600 students from Sarasota County public schools were in attendance.
