Suncoast Blood Bank is the first in the US to provide pathogen-reduced platelets to local hospitals that it serves. The technology founded by Cerus Corporation is called Intercept Blood System. It reduces the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections by inactivating viruses, bacteria and parasites. Chief operating officer with Suncoast Blood bank Jason Carney says this technology basically purifies blood products and keeps pathogens from being transmitted to patients. Sarasota Memorial Hospital will be the first hospital to provide these pathogen-reduced platelets to its patients.
